Design and fabrication of networks for bacterial computing

Abstract Non-deterministic polynomial (NP-) complete problems, whose number of possible solutions grows exponentially with the variables, require by necessity massively parallel computation. Because sequential computers, such as solid state-based ones, can solve only small instances these problems within a reasonable time frame, computation using motile biological agents in nano- and micro-scale networks has been proposed an alternative computational paradigm. Previous work demonstrated that protein molecular motors-driven cytoskeletal filaments are able to instance NP problem, i.e. subset sum embedded network. Autonomously moving bacteria interesting alternatives motor driven for solving because they easier operate with, have advantage cell division. Before scaling up large networks, bacterial motility behaviour various geometrical structures be characterised, stochastic traffic splitting junctions devices optimized, error rates minimized.
